For most Class 8-9 students eligible for both, IOQM deserves the primary preparation focus since it's the exam that determines eligibility for India's national olympiad pipeline (INMO, IMOTC, IMO). NMTC is still genuinely valuable — particularly for its written Part B, which builds proof-writing skill IOQM doesn't test directly — but as a complementary track rather than the primary one, once both are in the picture.
Where the Two Exams Overlap
Number theory, algebra, combinatorics and geometry form the core of both exams. A student preparing seriously for one is, in practice, already building most of the foundation the other needs — the overlap in raw content is substantial.

A Practical Prioritization Framework
- If a student is aiming seriously for India's national olympiad pipeline, IOQM preparation should take priority once they reach Class 8, since it is the only route to INMO.
- NMTC remains valuable as a parallel track — its Part B is genuinely useful practice for the proof-writing INMO eventually demands, arguably more so than IOQM's integer-answer format.
- For a student not yet Class 8 (so IOQM-ineligible), NMTC is a strong, worthwhile primary focus in its own right — the "prioritize IOQM" logic only kicks in once both are actually available.
