Section A: the compulsory 40
Because you cannot choose in Section A, its marks are the most predictable. That makes it the natural place to be systematic. Questions here tend to be shorter and more direct, often covering many chapters in one section, and the parts are usually independent. A slip in one does not spoil the others.
- Go in order but do not get stuck. If a part is taking more than a couple of minutes, mark it and move on. Come back at the end.
- Do not skip 'easy' working. Short questions still use step marks. Write the formula or the identity you use.
- Read the question stem twice for parts that need conditions, such as a specific interval, a rounding instruction, or a required form of the answer.
- Keep neat rough work in the margin or a designated area, clearly separate from the final answer, and cross it out properly if you need to.
- Recheck arithmetic in the last five minutes, starting with the parts where you did any mental calculation.
Section B: choosing well and committing
Section B is where a calm start makes a real difference. Spend the first two or three minutes reading every question in the section before you write anything. For each, ask: do I know how to start, and do I know roughly where it ends? Tick the ones where the answer is yes. If more questions are offered than you need, pick from your ticks and start with the one you are most confident about.
- Decide by chapter strength, not by how long or short the question looks. A short-looking question can hide a long calculation.
- Do not switch after a slow start, unless you are clearly stuck. Switching costs time twice: the time already spent and the time to re-read a new question.
- Check the instruction on extra attempts. Follow whatever the paper states about answering more questions than required, and cross out any attempt you do not want marked.
- Be careful with graph, construction and statistics questions. They take longer than they look and need instruments, scales and neatness. Start them with enough time in hand.
- Keep the last-minute questions for the ones with the most known steps. If time is short, a complete short question is worth more than a half-finished long one.
How step marking really works
ICSE Maths marking typically awards marks for method and accuracy, not just the final answer. That is good news for anyone who writes clearly, and unwelcome news for students who do everything in their head. A rough picture of how it plays out:
- Method marks are awarded for the correct approach or formula, even if a later arithmetic slip gives a wrong number.
- Accuracy marks are awarded for the correct value at the right stage, and often depend on the earlier method being correct.
- Follow-through credit is often given when an early slip is carried consistently through correct later steps, but only if you have shown those steps.
- A bare correct answer with no working may score well on a one-mark part but is risky on anything worth more.

Presentation habits that protect marks
- Write one step per line, with the equals signs aligned. It lets the examiner follow, and it lets you spot your own errors.
- Label each question clearly with its number and part, and leave a small gap between parts.
- Draw figures with a ruler and a sharp pencil, and label points and angles you use.
- State the final answer separately, such as underlined or boxed, with units where relevant.
- Do rough work in a marked area, not scattered through the fair answer.
A time plan you can rehearse
Confirm the total duration on the specimen paper, since it is not the same across all subjects, and then divide it into shares. A workable split is: about 40 percent of the time for Section A, about 45 to 50 percent for the questions you attempt in Section B, and the remaining 10 to 15 percent as a buffer for stuck questions and final checking. Practise this on full papers in the weeks before the exam, and adjust the shares based on where your marks actually go. If your first two mocks show Section A takes longer than planned, look for the topic that is slowing you down and fix it in practice, not in the exam hall.
