"Maths Excellence" sounds like it is only for students who already top the class. In practice, it serves three genuinely different kinds of students, and a programme that does not distinguish between them ends up serving none of them particularly well.

The three kinds of students it actually serves

  • The bored high scorer โ€” a student who tops school tests easily and is, frankly, understimulated by the pace and depth of the regular syllabus. This student needs harder problems and faster pacing, not more repetition of what they already know.
  • The exam-ready but not competition-ready student โ€” solid at board-style questions but has never been asked to solve a genuinely unfamiliar, multi-step problem. This student needs deliberate exposure to non-routine problem-solving, not just more of the same question types.
  • The Olympiad-track student โ€” already aiming at IOQM, NMTC or similar, who needs structured, sequenced training across number theory, algebra, geometry and combinatorics, not general enrichment.

What it is not

It is not extra homework help, and it is not the same as drilling past Olympiad papers on repeat. Both are common but ineffective versions of "advanced maths" โ€” the first just adds volume without depth, and the second trains pattern-recognition on specific known problems rather than the underlying reasoning skill that lets a student handle an unfamiliar problem on exam day.

What a week actually looks like

A well-run Maths Excellence week mixes a new concept or technique, guided practice on problems that require applying it in a slightly unfamiliar way, and a timed problem set that mimics real exam pressure โ€” whether that exam is a board paper, an entrance test, or an Olympiad qualifier. The specific mix shifts depending on which of the three student types above a child actually is.

How to know which type your child is

Ask your child to attempt one genuinely unfamiliar problem โ€” not from their current syllabus, one level up in difficulty โ€” and watch what happens. A bored high scorer will usually get there quickly once engaged. An exam-ready student will often know the right tools but struggle to figure out which one to use first. An Olympiad-track student will already be doing something close to this regularly. That single observation says more than a test score does.
